The Dolly Varden char is oftentimes confused with trout. If you want to know how you can tell the difference, just look at the spots. Char are dark with light spots, and trout are light with dark spots. These fish range from 16-22 inches, but we’ve seen some that were over 30! In terms of weight, they’re around 1-4 pounds on average.
Pink salmon, also known as “humpy”, are not always the best eating. But you don’t fish pink salmon for lunch; you fish for the experience. Pink salmon are known to put up quite a fight, and these epic battles are the highlight of many Alaskan fishing trips. They’re usually around 20-25 inches long, and between 6 and 9 pounds on average. Note: Pink salmon runs only occur during even numbered years, so plan accordingly!
Rainbow trout are usually about 20-23 inches on average, and they can range from 2 to 16 pounds. If you’ve come to the do some Kenai fishing for trout and salmon, you’ll probably run into these. But, to maintain their population, you’re typically only allowed to catch and release native specimens. Fortunately, a Cooper Landing fishing guide from Jason’s Guide Service can help you determine whether your latest catch is native.
Silver Salmon are oftentimes called the Coho Salmon in the lower 48. These salmon typically range from 24-30 inches long, and they usually weigh between 7 to 11 pounds. (We’ve seen some freaks that weighed up to 30 pounds, so maybe you’ll be one of the lucky few who make it onto our Braggin’ Board.) Silver Salmon are the go-to fish during the autumn months, with September being the most popular.
Sockeye Salmon runs are in late June and Early August, so you may want to plan your Kenai River fishing trip accordingly. These are great catches, excellent for eating, canning, and smoking. They range from about 18-31 inches long, and weigh in from 4-15 pounds (typically between 5-8).
