As Kenai Lake narrows, it turns into an 18-mile stretch of river, partially managed by Alaska State Parks, and partially managed by the Kenai River National Wildlife Refuge.
Permits aren’t just handed out by the Wildlife Refuge. There are a limited number of Kenai river fishing guides who can operate in the area, and Jason’s Guide Service is one of them. We make sure to abide by all restrictions in place, and we make sure our operation has a minimal footprint on this beautiful river.
All 18 miles of the Upper Kenai are for drift-only fishing. This means no motors. That’s why we use a custom-built drift boat to keep things quiet: It doesn’t spook the fish, it doesn’t generate a wake or tear up the riverbank, and it complies with the rules and regulations for Alaska fishing charters in the area. Since then, he’s gained more than 30 years of guide experience across the state – 14 of which he’s spent fishing the Kenai River. He was also featured on National Geographic’s the Savage Line, a pretty cool documentary series about Alaskan guides.
A Virginia native, Joe’s lifelong love of fishing brought him all the way to Alaska. He knew he wanted to work as a Kenai River fishing guide in Cooper Landing, so he joined Jason’s Guide Service in 2023. Since then, he’s become a skilled drift boat guide – and he does a fair bit of fly fishing himself. He happily shares his experience to teach new and experienced anglers alike.
